Caithness Freedom Officials Announce $22,500 Donation for Salem Township Volunteer Fire Company

August 29, 2023

Salem Township, Pa. — Representatives of the Caithness Freedom Generating Station today joined state and local officials to present a $22,500 donation to the Salem Township Volunteer Fire Company, the latest installment of a long-term commitment to the fire company and the surrounding community.

“Volunteer first responders are essential to the safety and well-being of the local community and businesses and facilities like Freedom. We are proud to play a small part in easing the financial burden of operating a volunteer fire company by helping them secure the resources needed to serve our community,” said Gary Keevill, Senior Vice President, Caithness Energy.

To date in 2023, the Caithness team has contributed donations to Central Columbia Little League,  Berwick YMCA, Stuart Tank Memorial, the Raise the Region fundraising effort, and the Salem Township Volunteer Fire Company. More community-giving contributions will be announced later in the year

Last year, Caithness contributed more than $25,000 to charitable organizations and causes, adding to its more than $800,000 designated for completed projects and future commitments in Salem Township and the surrounding area.

“Volunteer fire companies largely rely on fundraising efforts and donations from members of the community. We greatly appreciate Caithness Freedom’s long-term support which enabled us to purchase a new fire truck in 2019 that will serve Salem Township and surrounding communities for years to come,” said Jon Baltzer, Deputy Chief, Salem Township Fire Company.

Caithness Freedom generates more than 1,100 megawatts of reliable power, supplying approximately 900,000 homes and businesses in the region. The facility is one of the most efficient plants in the PJM Interconnection system, a regional transmission organization that coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity in 13 Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states.

Using state-of-the-art technology, the Freedom plant is the highest-efficiency user of locally produced natural gas in the region. A highly efficient combined cycle power plant such as Freedom reduces CO2 emissions by 3.2 million tons per year compared to older steam plants.  Additionally, the plant’s dry-cooling technology means that water usage is 95% lower than that of a plant of the same size using traditional cooling technology.
