Officials Present a $23,000 annual donation check to Salem Township Volunteer Fire Company
Salem Township, Pa. — Representatives of the Caithness Freedom team recently hosted members of the Salem Township Volunteer Fire Company, Police Department, and Emergency Management Agency at its natural gas electric generating facility for training and a facility walk-through.
The session provided a collaborative forum to review the facility’s footprint and operation, identify equipment and safety systems, and discuss potential hazards. There were also discussions to plan future training, including organized drills and additional emergency response planning.
“As an industry leader in the community, we have a talented group of facility operators committed to safe operations. We are also fortunate to have Salem Township first responders dedicated to providing the highest level of emergency services,” said Jack Monahon, P.E., General Manager of Operations, at Caithness Energy.
The Caithness Freedom team also presented a $23,000 donation to the Salem Township Volunteer Fire Company. This donation is the latest installment of a long-term commitment to the fire company and the surrounding community. The Caithness team’s support enabled Salem Township to purchase a new fire truck in 2019 that continues to serve the community.
“We are committed to ensuring Salem Township Volunteer Fire Company and the greater community have the resources and training needed to respond to an emergency at our facility, no matter how unlikely it may be,” Monahon added.
Caithness Freedom generates more than 1,100 megawatts of clean, reliable power from natural gas, supplying approximately 900,000 homes and businesses in the region. The facility is one of the most efficient plants in the PJM Interconnection system, a regional transmission organization that coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity in 13 Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states.
The facility utilizes state-of-the-art technology that has enabled Freedom to produce significantly fewer emissions than older coal and natural gas power generators in Pennsylvania, some of which produce more than double the CO2 emissions that the Freedom facility produces. The facility also deploys dry-cooling technology which utilizes 95 percent lower amounts of water than a plant of the same size using traditional wet-cooling technology.
